Garage Door Spring Replacement: What to Know

A practical guide from the MS Facility Solutions team.

A broken spring is the most common garage door failure, and the most dangerous to fix yourself. Garage door springs are under extreme tension, and a slip can cause serious injury.

Most homes use either torsion springs mounted above the door, or extension springs along the tracks. When one breaks, the door becomes very heavy and the opener may strain or fail to lift it. Running the door on a broken spring can damage the opener and cables.

Replacement is fast for a trained technician, usually under an hour, and springs are replaced in pairs so the door stays balanced. If your door slams shut, will not lift, or you hear a loud bang from the garage, call for service rather than forcing it.
